Artistic Research PhD candidates must fulfill two key components during their program: (1) a written thesis of approximately 40,000 words (which may involve academic analysis or deep reflection on creative work) and (2) a practical artistic research proposal. This could include significant music endeavors, theater productions, film projects, creative writing initiatives, traditional/contemporary arts applications, dance performances, community arts programs, or other creative undertakings connected to Irish or Gaeltacht culture. The scope and specifications of the artistic project are established collaboratively with the directorate, Department Head, and the Dean of Poetry, Celtic Studies, and Philosophy for final approval before being recorded by the Postgraduate Studies Office. Written notification regarding examination timelines and procedures will be provided to students at the start of their second year, tailored to their project's unique characteristics. The evaluation process consists of two stages: (1) assessment of the artistic proposal and (2) an oral defense following thesis submission. For public exhibitions or performances, examiners will attend the event. Written confirmation of examination details will be issued at the beginning of the student's second year.
