The Ryan Institute serves as a marine research center located at the University of Galway, situated near Galway City's center and in Carna, County Galway. It features an aquaculture and fisheries research facility in Connemara. Established in 1993 through a generous donation from the late Dr. Tony Ryan, the institute constructed a cutting-edge Marine Science building in a prime spot on the university campus. An extension to the MRI was added in 2008, equipped with advanced teaching and research spaces to support a new Graduate Programme in Marine Science. Researchers from the School of Natural Sciences, spanning fields like Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, and Oceanography, form the institute's team. Funding sources include Science Foundation Ireland, Enterprise Ireland, the Industrial Development Authority, the National Development Programme, the Higher Education Authority, the Beaufort Awards (Department of Communications, Energy & Natural Resources), the Marine Institute, and the European Union's Framework 7 Programme.

The Ryan Institute collaborates closely with the Environmental Change Institute and the National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Research.
