Our Master of Research (MRes) program in Geological Sciences is designed for driven students passionate about geological research. This MRes enables you to conduct specialized research in your chosen field under the guidance of world-renowned experts from University College Cork's School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences.
The Geological Sciences MRes is a 12-month full-time program (24 months part-time) starting in either October or January. The curriculum includes (a) a substantial research thesis and (b) coursework focusing on transferable skills, particularly scientific communication, presentation techniques, and essential research methodologies.
Your research topic can be selected from diverse faculty specialties within the Geology department, spanning paleontology, sedimentology, marine geology, structural geology, hydrogeology, igneous processes, and various paleo-environmental and geospatial disciplines.

Qualification Requirements
Applicants must have a Second Class Honours (minimum Grade 2.1) in a primary honours degree (NFQ, Level 8) in the following relevant subject areas: Geology, Geoscience or Earth Science.
You must be approved by the MRes coordinator and programme team, including the Head of Geology in the School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences.
The number of places is limited and decisions on entry to the programme will be made based on the applicant’s performance in their primary degree and interview according to the following criteria: academic qualifications, research experience and focus, scientific understanding, personal statement and strong recommendations from two academic referees.
