The MSc Geoinformatics program equips graduates with the technical expertise needed for careers in geoinformatics, especially in environmental and resource management applications. This intensive one-year full-time curriculum blends theory and practice, encompassing Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, geospatial data analysis, programming, and web-based GIS solutions.
The program structure includes 60 credits of coursework followed by an independent 30-credit research project culminating in an 8,000-word scientific dissertation. The Geography Department provides 50 credits of essential modules, while students can select 10 additional credits from Geography or other disciplines. Beyond classroom learning, students engage with professionals through expert-led seminars, visits to geoinformatics companies, and participation in national conferences.
Initial coursework establishes fundamental geoinformatics principles through lectures and hands-on sessions. The second term advances these skills with specialized topics like digital image processing and applied geoinformatics, delivered through interactive lectures and workshops. Following coursework completion, students dedicate the summer to their chosen research project within the geoinformatics field.
Applicants for the MSc in Geoinformatics must normally hold a Second Class Honours Grade I in a primary honours degree (NFQ, Level 8) or above, in a cognate area, e.g. Geography, Geology, Environmental Sciences, Computer Science, Physics, Engineering or a cognate discipline.
Applicants with a Second Class Honours Grade II in a primary honours degree (NFQ, Level 8), but with proven experience in an area of Geoinformatics, or with equivalent qualifications in related areas of science and technology, can be considered under Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for a place following interview and/or written or practical assessment by the programme team of the MSc in Geoinformatics.
