This course provides students with comprehensive expertise in exercise physiology, covering the physiological mechanisms and adaptations that take place during various forms of physical activity. Participants will learn how these adaptations contribute to overall health and wellness. The curriculum includes in-depth study of exercise assessment and programming for both healthy individuals and those with chronic conditions. Key lecture topics encompass neuromuscular physiology, cardiovascular and respiratory function, biomechanics, holistic physiological reactions to exercise and evaluation techniques, energy metabolism and dietary considerations in physical activity, evidence-based exercise programming, and physiological monitoring approaches for diverse populations. Practical training will involve performing fitness assessments and exercise testing. Semester 12 instruction will occur through traditional lectures. Blended learning format: All 16 modules will be accessible digitally through podcasts and delivered using Blackboard Collaborate Ultra virtual classrooms. (This arrangement allows international students to visit University of Galway for just four months from mid-May to August, with affordable housing options available in Corrib Village during this period.) Distance learners will access pre-recorded lectures weekly on Blackboard, supplemented by virtual sessions with the course director via UltraCollaborate to foster discussion and interaction.

As chronic disease prevalence rises, so does the need for exercise physiologists who can provide tailored fitness guidance to enhance quality of life. Graduates of this program will be qualified for positions in various settings including: Fitness centers and related establishments, Community sports and recreational venues, Municipal public health departments

Qualification Requirements

Students must have completed BSc (NFQ Level 8) in Physiology, Biomedical Science, Un-denominated Science, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Exercise Science, Nursing and Health Science, Physiotherapy, Podiatry or any other relevant biology or medical science area with at least a 2nd class honours, or equivalent. (Students who have received a BSc Honours qualification or equivalent will be given preference in the shortlisting process.) Adult learners seeking additional qualifications are also welcome. Work experience in the relevant area will be an advantage.

This course is suitable for students interested in a career in exercise prescription and graduates upon completion of this course will be eligible to register with REPs Ireland and American Association of Personal Trainers (AAPT).

For applicants where English is a second language, we will adhere to university guidelines of requiring IELTS scores of 6.5, TOEFL scores of 88 and/or Pearson PTE scores of 61 with no less than 6.5 in any component.
