The Structured MA in Classics is a one-year, full-time program (or two years part-time) designed for students to deepen their expertise in a specialized academic field. This program offers exceptional graduates the chance to expand their understanding of their chosen discipline while mastering essential research techniques and ethical considerations in Classical studies.
At University of Galway, our Classics research centers on three key areas: The evolution of identities
The intellectual connections linking Antiquity and the Middle Ages, along with Intertextuality and manuscript studies
When relevant, our work emphasizes the connections between Ireland's linguistic, literary, and cultural heritage and broader European history. We transcend conventional divisions between ancient and medieval scholarship, making us unique among Classics departments worldwide for our emphasis on integrating Classical and Celtic studies. This distinctive approach is evident in our recent funding achievements, graduate enrollment, and scholarly publications.
During the program, students will complete 30 to 35 ECTS of coursework, including a mandatory research methods/integrity module (minimum 5 ECTS). Participants will also undertake an independent research project or dissertation worth 55 or 60 ECTS (adjusted based on coursework credits). Each student receives guidance from a primary supervisor and a graduate research committee composed of seasoned scholars who will help design their academic path and provide continuous research support.
