Our Master of Arts in Classical Studies offers flexible study options, available as a one-year full-time program or a two-year part-time course. This degree enhances students' proficiency in Latin and Greek while deepening their understanding of Roman Imperial history, art, and literature, including how these cultural elements were preserved through medieval times into modernity. The program prepares graduates with essential research and writing capabilities for potential PhD studies in Classical Studies.
The curriculum is divided into two 45-credit segments: the first focuses on instructional modules, while the second involves a shorter research thesis.
During the initial phase, students complete 30 credits of language studies in Latin and Greek, plus 15 credits examining Roman history, culture, or their historical transmission - all taught through translated materials. Language courses accommodate various skill levels, from introductory to advanced, with advanced studies concentrating on texts from the Roman Imperial era.
The final segment pairs students with faculty advisors to produce a 20,000-word research dissertation on a chosen topic within Classical Studies, which may include Late Antiquity subjects.
Applicants should hold a Second Class Honours Grade I in a primary honours degree (NFQ, Level 8) or equivalent in Ancient History, Greek, Latin, Greek & Roman Civilisation or a related discipline.
Applicants who hold a Second Class Honours Grade II in a primary honours degree (NFQ, Level 8) will also be considered under Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) subject to the approval of the programme selection committee.
Some applicants who do not fulfil the usual entry requirements may be invited for an interview to satisfy the selection committee of their suitability for the programme.
