Urban design sits at the intersection of architecture and urban planning, with both fields offering distinct yet complementary perspectives to urban design theory and practice. This master's program combines the unique methodologies, professional viewpoints, and teaching approaches from both urban planning and architectural disciplines within the school. It equips students with specialized knowledge in urban design theory, urban conservation, nature-based solutions, and the connection between research and design.
Graduates will be prepared to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams to enhance urban spaces through design. The program also allows students to leverage the School's research strengths, positioning urban design as a key solution to contemporary environmental challenges. Ideal candidates include graduates from related fields seeking to specialize in urban design, such as architecture, landscape architecture, and planning.
Applications are also welcome from graduates of other relevant disciplines (e.g., geography, engineering, property economics, surveying) who demonstrate a specific interest in urban design rather than general planning.
The UCD School of Architecture, Planning & Environmental Policy is internationally recognized as a premier research hub in spatial planning and is a member of the Association of European Schools of Planning.
