The UCD School of History invites prospective students to apply for its PhD and MLitt programs.
The UCD PhD is a four-year structured research program (six years part-time) featuring a well-defined curriculum with training, coursework, a Research and Professional Development Plan, and teaching opportunities. Each student receives guidance from a primary supervisor and benefits from multiple academic resources, including a Doctoral Studies Panel (DSP). This panel brings together diverse expertise, providing exceptional support, especially for interdisciplinary projects. Students pursue independent research, typically leading to work suitable for peer-reviewed publication. With extensive supervisory experience, UCD School of History faculty offer broad academic knowledge. Numerous graduates have secured postdoctoral funding and faculty positions.
Additionally, the School provides an MLitt degree, a two-year research program (four years part-time) blending skill-based coursework with a substantial 40,000-50,000-word thesis (excluding bibliography and appendices).
The normal requirement for entry to a Research Master’s Degree programme is a second class honours degree in a relevant subject. In addition course work and examinations may also be specified by the College at entry; normally these have to be satisfactorily completed in the first year of a Master’s degree programme.
