Over its twenty-five-year history, the MUBC program has witnessed increasing recognition of how crucial built heritage conservation is for culture, society, and the economy. Both nationally and globally, there's rising demand for expertise in preserving and managing diverse structures that embody our societal heritage. Ireland's legislative landscape has evolved following its ratification of the European Architectural Heritage Convention, now requiring historic building preservation to align with top international benchmarks. While building conservation and urban area preservation differ, they interconnect - both demand specialized knowledge, multidisciplinary teamwork, and expanded theoretical foundations across relevant fields.
Launched at UCD in 1986, the Urban and Building Conservation program addresses the escalating need for architectural conservation specialists. It complements UCD Architecture's comprehensive curriculum, equipping students and professionals for evolving architectural roles, especially in building and urban renewal. UCD Architecture has positioned itself as Ireland's hub for conservation studies. The MUBC program draws professionals from public and private sectors alike, welcoming architects, planners, engineers, archaeologists, surveyors, historians, and related specialists.
