The Master of Research (MRes) in Sustainable Materials and the Environment is designed for driven students passionate about advancing research in this field.
This program enables you to conduct an independent research project aligned with your interests, guided by world-class academics from either the School of Chemistry or Tyndall National Institute at University College Cork.
This full-time 12-month program begins each September. The curriculum combines (a) an extensive research thesis with (b) specialized coursework covering sustainable materials, environmental chemistry, and essential research competencies like scientific writing, presentations, and methodology.
Research topics are selected from the diverse expertise of faculty members specializing in sustainable materials and environmental chemistry across both academic units.
Students complete 90 credits worth of work during the program, with the cornerstone being a substantial 25,000-word thesis. Additionally, participants must successfully complete 20 credits worth of elective coursework modules.
Applicants must have a second-class honours degree (minimum H2.1 or equivalent) in Chemistry, Material Science, Materials Chemistry, or Physics. You must be approved by the MRes coordinator and course team, including the Head of the School of Chemistry.
The number of places is limited and decisions on entry to the course will be made based on the applicant’s performance in their primary degree and interview according to the following criteria: academic qualifications, research experience and focus, scientific understanding, personal statement, and strong recommendations from two academic referees.
