Ethnomusicology explores global musical expressions across all eras, skill levels, and cultural contexts. This vibrant field emphasizes immersive fieldwork to uncover the meanings and values people attach to musical expression.
Practitioners prioritize building connections within musical communities and engaging directly in musical practice. These transformative experiences, both enlightening and grounding, shape our interpretations as we develop insights alongside the communities we study. Through applied ethnomusicology initiatives, scholars also serve as advocates, leveraging their knowledge to drive positive social change.
Our intensive one-year MA in Ethnomusicology presents a contemporary approach to advanced music studies in Ireland. The program uniquely blends academic research with practical performance across diverse global music traditions.
The curriculum features tailored research training, performance practice, ethnomusicological history and theory, interdisciplinary approaches, performance studies, and ethnographic fieldwork. Students culminate their studies with a self-directed research project, which may take the form of ethnographic writing, major performances, documentary films, or educational resources for world music instruction.
