Our Master of Arts program in Modern and Contemporary Art History, Theory, and Criticism provides an exceptional graduate-level curriculum that delivers an engaging, thorough examination of 20th and 21st-century artistic movements and theoretical frameworks. This art history degree program blends comprehensive historical foundations with innovative critical approaches, fostering expertise in detailed visual interpretation, critical text analysis, and the development of autonomous, original research methodologies. Graduates will acquire essential competencies for advanced academic pursuits or diverse professional paths in the arts sector. Students typically join us with academic backgrounds in art history, studio art, cinema studies, literary arts, philosophy, and related fields. The program offers flexible study options: a one-year full-time track or a two-year part-time daytime schedule (available exclusively to EU residents). The structured curriculum features four intensive core modules focusing on modern and contemporary art, complemented by a 5,000-word literature review and a substantial 20,000-word dissertation project.
Applicants must hold either:
an honours primary degree in History of Art at Second Class Honours Grade I in a primary honours degree (NFQ, Level 8) or equivalent, or
Art school students should have a Second Class Honours Grade I minimum in their History of Art classes or equivalent, and
a one-page statement of purpose (500 words) acceptable to History of Art staff, detailing the student's interest in the programme, and their particular research interests and methodologies to date, and their future professional goals.
