This program offers students an in-depth exploration of early medieval Ireland's religious culture and spirituality, spanning from the Christian conversion period through the 12th century. Christianity fundamentally reshaped Ireland while simultaneously absorbing significant elements of native traditions that remained meaningful to Irish believers. Students will examine these transformations, along with Ireland's Christian influence across Europe, through detailed analysis of diverse religious texts. The curriculum also includes optional introductory courses in Old Irish and Latin. A supervised thesis project enhances research capabilities. With its exceptional breadth and variety, the program features optional field trips to experience tangible remnants of this captivating era firsthand.
The curriculum primarily comprises Celtic Civilisation courses, supplemented by selected modules in Archaeology, History, Folklore, and Latin. Participants will investigate Christianity's arrival in Ireland, its intricate adaptation within native cultural frameworks, and Gaelic Christianity's broader impact on European ecclesiastical development. Key themes include saint veneration and supernatural voyage narratives. Students can tailor their studies through diverse module selections, specialized research topics, and direct engagement with original texts via Old Irish and Latin instruction. The optional field trip component (involving additional expenses) visits early Christian sites, connecting textual study with physical artifacts. The program culminates in a Master's thesis that applies acquired knowledge while refining academic research and writing skills.
