The one-year Higher Diploma in Philosophy offers a unique opportunity to explore both western and eastern philosophical traditions. You'll examine diverse philosophical ideas and frameworks, covering topics like mind and consciousness, political action, ethics and aesthetics, as well as societal structures, globalization, and concepts of power and territory.
Starting each September, this program enables students from all academic backgrounds to engage in focused study of eastern and western thought. Participants choose 12 modules (60 credits) from second and third-year undergraduate offerings.
These modules aim to present fundamental philosophical inquiries, theoretical perspectives, and key texts in specific domains. They typically include assigned readings and written work. While a passion for reading and writing about philosophy is beneficial, no prior expertise in philosophical methods or concepts is required.
Through your coursework, you'll analyze philosophical works, engage in discussions, and become acquainted with important thinkers and concepts. The program enhances your understanding of philosophical history, sharpens your critical reading and writing abilities, and strengthens your capacity to comprehend and articulate arguments clearly.
It is intended for those who already have a 3 or 4-year primary degree, preferably in the area of Arts or the Sciences, and who wish to study the subject of Philosophy intensively over one academic year. The Higher Diploma in Arts is a conversion programme and applicants would not normally have studied the relevant subject to Honours Degree level previously.
