The Higher Diploma in Folklore provides a chance to explore Ireland's daily life in all its vibrant variety and cultural manifestations. Folklore, also known as popular culture, examines both historical and contemporary aspects of everyday existence. Essentially, it investigates human life by analyzing how people conducted their routines: their homes, tools, tales, customs, faiths, spiritual practices, and worldviews.
Folklore holds a distinctive role in shaping Irish identity, influencing literature, and standing as a key characteristic of Irish heritage. UCC's Department of Folklore offers unparalleled perspectives on Irish customs, popular culture, and traditions, being one of just two such academic departments nationwide.
At the core of the Higher Diploma in Folklore lies the examination of ordinary existence. With decades of expertise in teaching and pioneering research into Irish traditions and folklore, the Department of Folklore and Ethnology serves as the perfect environment to study these facets of Irish culture, ensuring that enrollment in the Higher Diploma in Folklore becomes an enriching and fulfilling journey.
It is intended for those who already have a 3 or 4 year primary degree and who wish to study the subject Folklore intensively over one or two academic years.
