UCC's Geoscience program focuses on exploring Earth's history, composition, structure, and development. Students can specialize in one of three pathways during their third and fourth years: geoscience, environmental geoscience, or palaeobiology. The curriculum examines Earth's physical systems, including its crust, interior, atmosphere, oceans, surface processes, climate history, and fossil records. It also covers natural resource studies, integrating knowledge from geology, geography, geophysics, geochemistry, oceanography, and biology.Geoscience addresses critical 21st-century challenges such as locating essential resources (like battery minerals and clean water), predicting natural hazards (including earthquakes and floods), developing renewable energy solutions (such as tidal and wind power), and supporting sustainable infrastructure projects (like site assessments and land remediation). The BSc in Geoscience requires no prior subject knowledge. Through this program, students explore Earth's 4.5-billion-year formation and the processes that sustain life. This field examines planetary history, monitors current conditions, and forecasts future changes - while also extending to the study of celestial bodies to enhance both terrestrial and cosmic understanding.Fieldwork is a key component of UCC's Geoscience courses. Students conduct a major research project between their third and fourth years, either locally or internationally. The final year focuses exclusively on Geoscience, allowing students to advance their research while studying specialized topics in depth.
