This century's major societal issues - along with numerous UN Sustainable Development Goals - are closely tied to earth and ocean sciences: growing exposure to geological risks (like floods and seismic activity), the urgent requirement for clean energy alternatives to fossil fuels and solutions for carbon capture, rising demand for scarce minerals to power modern tech, and the critical need for sustainable water management amid climate shifts.
The University of Galway provides an Earth and Ocean Sciences program unmatched in Ireland. Our faculty's expertise spans diverse fields including mineral studies, rock analysis, geochemical processes, earth physics, groundwater systems, marine chemistry, biological oceanography, fossil research, and sedimentary science. When examining seismic activity, crustal movements, volcanic systems, marine ecosystems, ocean circulation patterns, species extinctions, climate shifts, energy solutions, or environmental contaminants, the most valuable discoveries frequently emerge from cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Professional Pathways
Our Earth and Ocean Science alumni hold positions in governmental organizations (such as the EPA, Teagasc, and Geological Survey Ireland), municipal agencies, and regulatory bodies. Others continue their academic journeys through research in Ireland and abroad, while many work in private industry across energy sectors (including geothermal, wind, and other renewables), mining operations (particularly for rare earth elements), environmental conservation, and tourism. Ireland's geoscience field employs over 25,000 professionals and contributes upwards of €3 billion annually to the national economy.
