The Public History and Cultural Heritage program offers students a comprehensive foundation in public history while equipping graduates with exceptional skills for cultural heritage management. We take an expansive view of public history and cultural heritage. This curriculum explores cultural memory—how it's formed, interpreted, and sometimes forgotten—along with examining how history is publicly engaged within contemporary society. It investigates political aspects of public memorials and 'memory sites,' while evaluating how museums, galleries, and media influence public historical understanding. The program also addresses practical challenges in preserving, displaying, and communicating tangible cultural legacies, especially where interpretations and significance are debated.
Delivered in partnership with Dublin's premier cultural organizations, the program provides internship opportunities through various institutions. Recent collaborators include Dublin City Gallery, Dublin City Library and Archive, Glasnevin Trust: Hugh Lane Gallery, The Little Museum of Dublin, Marsh's Library, the National Gallery of Ireland, the National Library of Ireland, the National Museum of Ireland, and St Patrick's Cathedral.
