Linguistics involves the methodical examination of human language. While its origins trace back to ancient times, the 1900s witnessed a surge in scholarly work and the emergence of innovative theories and methodologies. This discipline has grown into a dynamic and thriving field, closely linked to numerous areas such as psychology, sociology, anthropology, cognitive science, computing, and philosophy.
Human language presents intricate systems, and linguistics strives to characterize and interpret this multifaceted nature, particularly focusing on vocal sounds, word and sentence structures, and the interplay between meaning, grammar, and situational context.
Applicants should have a good honours degree (at least an upper second or equivalent; GPA of at least 3.2). Previous knowledge of linguistics is not a requirement. Applicants whose first language is not English and who have not been educated through the medium of English must meet the College's requirements for English-language proficiency. Students whose first language is not English are encouraged to attend our pre-sessional Summer programme to prepare them for postgraduate study in Ireland.
