The Master of Philosophy in English Language Teaching (ELT) combines academic study, research, and hands-on application. It promotes a holistic approach to ELT that harmonizes theoretical knowledge with practical implementation. This program enables current educators to examine contemporary ELT challenges while enhancing their grasp of both theoretical foundations and classroom applications in TESOL and similar contexts.
For those beginning their teaching journey, the elective English Language Teaching Practice modules offer introductory experience in lesson design and instructional methods through classroom observations, structured micro-teaching sessions, and related activities.
This M.Phil. program gains special advantage from CLCS's participation in creating and applying two significant Council of Europe frameworks that shape global discussions about language education: the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and the European Language Portfolio. These resources hold particular value for English teaching professionals, including those in TESOL fields.
Applicants should have a good honours degree (at least an upper second or equivalent; GPA of at least 3.2). Applicants whose first language is not English and who have not been educated through the medium of English must meet the College's requirements for English-language proficiency, i.e. the minimum acceptable IELTS score is 6.5. For this course, no individual IELTS band can be below 6 (or the minimum equivalents in other approved English language proficiency tests listed on the College website). Students whose first language is not English are encouraged to attend our pre-sessional Summer programme to prepare them for postgraduate study in Ireland.
