The Higher Diploma in Arts English is a postgraduate program designed for individuals holding a degree in another field who want to pursue intensive English studies. Students complete various second- and third-year undergraduate English modules over one academic year (full-time) or two years (part-time).
This diploma serves as both a standalone qualification and a stepping stone for further education, particularly for graduates considering advanced studies in English at the master's level.
The program comprises 60 credits worth of modules selected from existing second- and third-year English courses. It can be completed in one year (full-time) or two years (part-time), with credits earned through a mix of lecture modules (typically 5 credits) and seminar courses (10 credits). Each year offers diverse courses spanning different literary periods, from medieval to contemporary literature, though specific offerings may vary annually.
It is intended for those who already have a 3 or 4-year primary degree, preferably in the area of Arts or the Sciences, and who wish to study the subject of English intensively over one academic year. The Higher Diploma in Arts is a conversion programme and applicants would not normally have studied the relevant subject to Honours Degree level previously.
