The program emphasizes critical analysis, interdisciplinary approaches, and sociological theory. As one of Canada's most vibrant hubs for social theory and research with strong national and global recognition, students gain direct access to distinguished faculty members, including numerous research chair holders, engaged in sociological studies across Arts, Law, Education, Fine Arts, Environmental Studies, and other academic divisions.
Available for both full-time and part-time students, the PhD program cultivates research and teaching professionals capable of executing significant independent studies, contributing to disciplinary debates through scholarly publications, and instructing foundational and specialized sociology courses at undergraduate and graduate levels.
Doctoral candidates must fulfill all degree requirements within six years of initial enrollment, maintaining continuous registration at York University throughout this period.
Part-time enrollment doesn't extend completion timelines. Successful part-time doctoral study typically requires either job-related dissertation research opportunities or the ability to transition to full-time study for one or two years.
