The program centers on musicology, ethnomusicology, and composition, with a strong yet not limited focus on North American musical traditions. This encompasses jazz, urban popular music, sacred music, classical compositions, and both rural and urban folk music. Ethnomusicology, modern classical works, jazz, and popular music receive particular attention. Faculty members include experts in ethnomusicology, music history, music theory, and composition. Students benefit from extensive specialized resources such as: analog and digital piano laboratories; piano practice units; ethnomusicology and jazz collections; York University's Sound & Moving Image Library; and popular music archives.
