Biology served as the foundational science at York University, introducing its initial undergraduate and graduate programs during the 1960s. This field examines living organisms, technically defined as entities capable of metabolism and reproduction. Researchers in biology investigate life forms from multiple perspectives, including behavior, evolutionary processes, ecological relationships, cellular structures, molecular interactions, and genetic inheritance. Their studies span diverse species, from plant life and insects to viruses and human beings. Biology frequently intersects with other disciplines, giving rise to specialized fields like biochemistry, biophysics, biotechnology, and biopsychology.
As York's oldest scientific program, the Biology department boasts world-renowned faculty members known for their teaching excellence and research contributions. This scientific discipline explores all living systems, from microscopic molecules to entire ecosystems. The curriculum provides broad course selections across biological specialties, allowing students to either sample various subfields or concentrate on specific areas like molecular biology, genetics, cellular processes, ecological systems, or physiological functions. The program offers both three-year and four-year degree options, along with numerous double major and major-minor combinations.
The Biology Bachelor of Science program features adaptable coursework that covers biological concepts from molecular interactions to ecosystem dynamics. Students can either explore diverse biological topics or specialize in particular areas such as physiological systems, cellular and molecular processes, genetic mechanisms, or ecological relationships.
Students need to have: Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD); Six 4U/4M courses, including ENG4U, NBE4U or FRA4U. Students from other countries should have country specific requirements equivalent to Canada.
