The four-year PhD in Geography is delivered through the Waterloo-Laurier Graduate Program in Geography, a partnership that creates Canada's third-largest graduate geography program. This collaborative initiative is strengthened by multiple research centers such as the Laurier Institute for Water Science, Cold Regions Research Centre, and International Migration Research Centre.
Students thrive in our vibrant academic community, drawing on the extensive knowledge of faculty members and peers. The joint program structure enables exploration of diverse research areas, from critical social and environmental issues to fundamental philosophical and technical inquiries.
Our geography PhD program aims to develop comprehensive theoretical and practical understanding through coursework, while offering teaching experience via assistantships and lectures. Students gain essential research skills through independent projects and assistantships, ultimately achieving professional independence in teaching, research, and academic publishing.

A master's degree in geography, or a related field, with a minimum A- standing.
Applications are reviewed by the graduate program committee, which considers all prior university grades, a statement of research interests and letters of reference.
Exceptional students may obtain early entry to our PhD program from our master's program.
TOEFL iBT/TOEFL iBT Home Edition: minimum score of 83, with minimum skill scores of 20 in each of the skills tests (speaking, writing, reading and listening).
Paper-based TOEFL: minimum of 560.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS, IELTS Online): academic minimum score of 6.5 with no band score below 6.0.
