The Philosophy PhD program at Western spans four years. During the initial year, students enroll in coursework; the second year involves a comprehensive examination in their primary field of study and a preparatory course for developing and defending a thesis proposal; the final two years are dedicated to dissertation research and writing.
Course offerings and faculty supervision align with the department's core specializations, organized into five key areas: feminist philosophy; historical philosophy (covering ancient, medieval, and modern periods); ethics, politics, and legal theory; philosophy of mind and language; and philosophy of science (encompassing mathematics and logic).
