Students beginning the PhD program with a Master's degree in philosophy typically need to complete 9 single-semester 500-level courses (including at least five during their first two terms) and pass three comprehensive exams selected from seventeen philosophy specializations within their initial two years. Prior to dissertation work, candidates must present a research proposal and successfully defend it during an oral examination that assesses their readiness for doctoral research. The dissertation phase generally spans approximately two years.
Exceptional applicants holding an honors bachelor's degree or equivalent in philosophy may gain direct PhD admission, though they'll need to complete up to 12 courses before taking comprehensive exams. All other program requirements apply equally.
