The Department of Philosophy provides MA programs (both thesis and non-thesis options) and PhD programs in Philosophy, available in English and French. In line with University guidelines, students can choose their preferred official language for studies.
The Department is involved in joint programs for Women's Studies (MA level), Medieval and Renaissance Studies (MA level), and Canadian Studies (PhD level).
The philosophy PhD program prepares students for academic roles in philosophy and related fields spanning humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and emerging areas like cognitive science. Philosophy doctoral graduates also pursue careers in government, academic publishing, and various academic positions focused on research or teaching. Through comprehensive exams, diverse courses, workshops, and colloquia, our PhD candidates gain exposure to multiple philosophical approaches—spanning contemporary and historical perspectives across analytic and continental traditions, offered in both English and French.
