The Philosophy PhD program at Western spans four years. During the first year, students enroll in coursework. The second year involves completing a comprehensive examination in their primary field of study and finishing a preparatory course for developing and defending their thesis proposal. The final two years are dedicated to dissertation research and writing.
Course offerings and faculty supervision align with the department's core specializations, organized into five key areas: feminist philosophy; historical philosophy (covering ancient, medieval, and modern periods); ethics, politics, and legal theory; philosophy of mind and language; and philosophy of science (encompassing mathematics and logic).
