Western University's Department of Philosophy presents the Diploma in Ethics, designed to address increasing societal interest in ethical considerations across professional and public spheres. This program aims to deepen participants' ethical comprehension, equipping them to identify and address moral challenges in diverse social contexts. Students will gain foundational knowledge of ethical principles, key debates, historical perspectives, and analytical approaches while honing critical thinking, writing, and communication abilities. This postgraduate qualification offers flexible completion options, allowing students to finish within one year of full-time study or spread their coursework over several years.
The curriculum comprises five full-course equivalents, with mandatory components including four half-courses covering moral theory, ethical reasoning, and professional ethics. Participants must also complete six additional half-courses in applied ethics, political philosophy, or legal philosophy. Course offerings span topics such as corporate ethics, medical ethics, mortality studies, gender philosophy, political thought history, and ecological philosophy.
Admission requires completion of a three- or four-year bachelor's degree, with the program specifically tailored for non-Philosophy graduates needing no prior ethics training. While open to all qualified applicants, this diploma particularly benefits current or aspiring professionals in fields like healthcare, law, media, education, engineering, public service, or commerce. Students may pursue this qualification through either intensive one-year study or extended part-time enrollment.
