The Philosophy program at KPU offers students a comprehensive foundation in key areas of Western philosophical thought. Students pursuing this major will engage with subjects including logic, epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, and philosophical history. Designed with multiple educational goals in mind, the program particularly emphasizes cultivating analytical thinking and writing abilities, both broadly and within specialized philosophical research. KPU's Philosophy students benefit from an academically rigorous yet supportive environment that equips them for advanced philosophical studies while fostering civic engagement, leadership qualities, and transferable skills in analysis, communication, and creative problem-solving applicable to diverse professional fields.
The BA Major in Philosophy enables students to establish a strong academic grounding in this fundamental humanities discipline. All students begin with an introductory formal logic course at the 1000-level. Required 2000-level coursework covers five essential philosophy domains: Moral Theory (examining concepts of right and wrong), Metaphysics (exploring the nature of existence), Epistemology (investigating knowledge and its boundaries), Ancient Greek Philosophy, and Modern Philosophy.
Advanced students can choose from several specialized pathways: intensive seminar-style Special Topics courses; an Applied Ethics concentration featuring tailored courses in Business, Environmental, and Biomedical Ethics; a hands-on Practicum course strengthening research and professional skills; or a competitive Honours program culminating in an original thesis project.
