Western University offers and cultivates an interdisciplinary approach to environmental and sustainability education and research. Cross-disciplinary collaboration is fundamental to environmental studies, with courses drawing expertise from multiple faculties including Science, Engineering, Social Science, Arts and Humanities, Information and Media Studies, along with professional schools like Medicine & Dentistry, Business (Ivey), and Law. Students explore diverse perspectives on environmental challenges, covering topics from biodiversity conservation and water security to renewable energy, ecosystem management, climate-related hazards, and sustainable corporate strategies.
Students develop skills to bridge disciplinary divides in environmental communication and integrate knowledge from various fields to tackle practical problems. Grounded in scientific fundamentals - spanning biology, chemistry, math, earth sciences, GIS, and physical geography - the Environmental Science program uniquely supplements this foundation with opportunities to study complementary disciplines like anthropology, business administration, economics, Indigenous studies, philosophy, political science, human geography, and sociology.
