Examine the forces that influence daily life through the lens of gender in modern society. Our curriculum helps cultivate an analytical approach considering elements like biological sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, racial background, socioeconomic status, and physical ability. These frameworks may fundamentally alter how you perceive other academic subjects and personal experiences. Our program showcases the growing scope of feminist scholarship, covering areas from gender theory to LGBTQ+ studies, healthcare, legal matters, philosophy, gender-based violence, workplace equality, and women in the arts.
The Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies department was formally created at The University of Western Ontario in July 2006, building upon the Women's Studies program founded in 1987. As an interdisciplinary unit, it operates within both the Arts and Humanities and Social Science faculties. Students can pursue various degree options while engaging with feminist research through visiting scholars, lecture series, academic conferences, faculty discussions, and scholarly works. The department also maintains an energetic student organization dedicated to women's studies.
