The field of women's and gender studies offers an engaging interdisciplinary curriculum that examines diverse topics related to social justice, political systems, and cultural phenomena. Learners will investigate and engage with contemporary and historical discussions surrounding women's lived experiences, gender dynamics, racial issues, socioeconomic structures, and systems of oppression.
This academic program examines numerous social, political, and cultural matters from feminist perspectives. As a vibrant cross-disciplinary field, it incorporates various theoretical frameworks and practical applications, covering areas such as media and consumer culture, gender-based violence, LGBTQ+ scholarship, women in STEM fields, spatial studies, Indigenous feminist thought, men's studies, and historical perspectives. The feminist movements of the 1960s and 1970s in North America catalyzed the creation of numerous organizations and institutions that prioritized women's concerns. At the University of Manitoba, Women's Studies emerged as an academic discipline in the early 1970s through the efforts of dedicated feminist scholars who recognized the need for specialized programming addressing women's issues. We remain deeply indebted to the pioneering women who established our program during an era when female faculty members were scarce at the University of Manitoba, and creating dedicated spaces for discussing women's issues represented a courageous innovation.
