The Master of Arts in Sustainable Leisure Management is available at VIU's Nanaimo campus, situated on picturesque Vancouver Island - a renowned Canadian destination for recreation and tourism. This innovative two-year program takes a fresh perspective on ecotourism and progressive leisure studies, blending hands-on fieldwork with academic learning in an international framework. Through practical learning experiences led by distinguished faculty, students explore both leisure and sustainability disciplines.
Alumni of this Sustainable Tourism graduate program secure roles as sustainability specialists, advisors, and managers across public agencies, corporations, and consulting organizations.
This unique program positions graduates where two dynamic, globally relevant fields converge: sustainable development and leisure services. It equips future leaders with the tools to develop sustainable solutions that allow both communities and visitors to responsibly enjoy recreational activities, cultural attractions, heritage sites, and outdoor adventures. The curriculum features an unconventional, globally-focused learning environment that emphasizes practical application alongside theoretical study and immersive learning techniques. Two core academic components define the program: 1) foundational concepts in sustainable leisure practices; and 2) comprehensive research, innovation, and knowledge application skills to translate insights into real-world solutions. Students must also complete a thesis project showcasing their proficiency in knowledge transfer methodologies, including advanced research capabilities.

Meet one of the following VIU English language requirements: IELTS 7.0 (with no band below 6.5); TOEFL iBT 93 (with no band below 20); CAEL 70 (no band below 60); Pearson (PTE) 65 no section below 60; Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) 185 overall; Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) 185 overall.
