This program delivers the technical education needed to launch careers across various forest technology disciplines. It focuses on understanding and valuing all key forest resources, such as timber, recreation areas, wildlife habitats, rangelands, fisheries, watersheds, and scenic environments. The curriculum is accredited by the Canadian Technology Accreditation Board, and graduates qualify for Registered Forest Technologist (RFT) status with the Association of BC Forest Professionals (ABCFP).
Twelve program courses are ABCFP-approved and can count toward becoming a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) under BC's Foresters Act. Students may receive transfer credits toward VIU's Bachelor of Natural Resource Protection, Biology Major (BSc), Fisheries & Aquaculture (BSc), as well as forestry degrees at UBC, UNBC, and the University of Alberta.
Between their first and second years, students must secure summer forestry employment to gain hands-on experience. VIU supports students in finding forestry jobs during summers and after graduation.
The program accepts second-year transfers from BC community colleges or accredited forest technology schools in Canada/US. Each transfer application receives individual evaluation. VIU students can also transfer to other institutions.
Second-year students may join international field schools at partner institutions abroad while earning VIU credits.
First-year students must complete two one-day First Aid certifications (OFA Level 1 with Transportation Endorsement) by September's end.
After completing VIU's program (including a "bridging" year), students can directly enter UBC's third-year Forest Resource Management or Forest Operations degree programs.
Over $20,000 in specialized scholarships, awards, and bursaries are available annually for forestry students, supplementing general financial aid. For details, contact the Financial Aid office or visit their website.
