This program cultivates versatile technologists by providing comprehensive training in both practical and theoretical aspects of fish and invertebrate cultivation, fisheries habitat evaluation, stock assessment, regulatory frameworks, production oversight, and environmental management.
Instruction combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on application through classroom teaching and experiential learning. The curriculum offers a balanced mix of foundational concepts and professional development to ensure career adaptability. Approximately 25% of student time is dedicated to practical fisheries and aquaculture projects conducted both on-campus and at external sites.
The initial year establishes core competencies in statistics, biological sciences, communication skills, aquatic habitats, and fish husbandry techniques. Weekly practicums place students in diverse field settings including hatcheries, spawning channels, shellfish operations, and conservation initiatives, complemented by regular on-campus project work. Numerous courses incorporate substantial fieldwork components, exposing participants to various industry sectors and professional networks over the two-year duration.
A mandatory summer employment component between academic years provides relevant industry experience. Program advisors assist with placement coordination, with academic credit awarded upon submission of required documentation and presentations.
Second-year studies focus on specialized fisheries and aquaculture subjects including aquatic engineering, mollusk production, and organism health management. Field-based freshwater techniques courses provide practical experience at local aquatic sites. Students can customize their final-year practicum and project work to align with specific career interests.
Beyond standard institutional scholarships, dedicated funding opportunities exist for fisheries students. Prospective applicants should consult the Financial Aid & Awards department for details.
A condensed one-year post-degree option is available for biology or zoology graduates, requiring completion of diploma requirements plus a summer practicum (see admission prerequisites).
