The Urban and Inner-City Studies Major offers an interdisciplinary exploration of cities as vibrant, evolving spaces. Situated in a distinctive location, our program bridges the University of Winnipeg with north end communities, serving both as an access point for local residents and as a learning hub for UWinnipeg students. This curriculum blends conventional urban studies with specialized courses addressing inner-city dynamics, including Indigenous urban experiences, immigrant and refugee narratives, and women's roles in urban settings. Canadian cities face significant challenges—from suburban expansion to downtown renewal, from demographic shifts to globalization's impacts. Urban areas also grapple with growing poverty and systemic marginalization. Through this program, students analyze the political, economic, social, and spatial dimensions of urban transformation from multiple academic viewpoints.
