Geography explores the relationships between Earth's spaces and locations. Experts in this field examine how physical and human elements are arranged across our planet, along with humanity's influence on natural ecosystems. Geographers play a crucial role in conserving sustainable environments and overseeing essential resources like land, water, and air. Through examining places and landscapes, they reveal how culture shapes both urban and rural areas. By analyzing political, social, and economic trends through geographic and historical lenses, students gain insights into how local and regional landscapes evolve.

The Geography B.A. Major offers three pathways: Sustainable Resource Management, Urban and Social Sustainability, or a General track covering broader geographic concepts. Each specialization enhances communication abilities through verbal, written, and visual methods while developing practical skills in spatial analysis, remote sensing, and GIS technology. Students learn to approach challenges critically, evaluate issues, and develop solutions, especially in resource management and urban development contexts.

The Geography B.A. Minor allows students to customize their studies to align with academic or professional aspirations. Notably, this subject qualifies as a teaching specialty in British Columbia's secondary schools.

VIU boasts a cutting-edge GIS laboratory equipped with industry-standard software, offering extensive hands-on experience with digital mapping tools. The program's intimate class sizes and close faculty-student collaboration foster enriched learning.
