The Urban and Inner-City Studies Major is an interdisciplinary program focused on analyzing cities as vibrant, evolving spaces. Situated in a distinctive location, it acts as both an access point for north end residents to join the University of Winnipeg and a hub for the broader UWinnipeg community to engage with and learn from the north end neighborhood. This program blends conventional urban studies with specialized courses exploring inner-city themes, including Indigenous urban experiences, immigrant and refugee narratives, and women's roles. Canadian cities remain focal points for significant challenges—from overseeing suburban expansion to fostering downtown renewal, addressing demographic shifts, and navigating globalization and economic transformations. Urban areas also face growing poverty and social marginalization. Through an interdisciplinary lens, the Urban and Inner-City Studies program explores the political, economic, social, and spatial dimensions of these critical urban issues.
