Geography is a multifaceted field that examines both natural and human-made environments across various scales, from local communities to global systems. From addressing climate change crises to exploring socioeconomic connections, assessing environmental transformations, or creating advanced mapping technologies, Geography connects the social sciences (human geography), geospatial technologies (geomatics), and natural sciences (physical geography) to develop sustainable solutions for global challenges. If you seek a foundational discipline that provides practical experience, cultivates both analytical and observational skills, and delivers a holistic approach to solving today's most pressing environmental and sustainability issues, look no further. Our Department provides undergraduate programs (B.E.S.), a Master of Climate Change degree (M.C.C.), research-based graduate degrees (M.E.S., M.A., M.Sc.), and a Ph.D. program.
The Department of Geography and Environmental Management at the University of Waterloo ranks among the top 100 Geography departments globally and holds the 5th position in Canada. With 35 faculty members specializing in diverse areas of human geography, physical geography, geomatics, and aviation, we foster a dynamic academic environment. At the graduate level, we collaborate with Wilfrid Laurier University's Geography and Environmental Studies department, forming the "Waterloo-Laurier Graduate Program in Geography," which combines the strengths of both institutions. Students can pursue three thesis-based master's degrees (MA, MES, MSc) or three course-based programs (MA, MES, MCC). The program encourages interdisciplinary exploration through connections with research labs, centers, and initiatives like the Collaborative Water Program. As part of the University of Waterloo—recognized for its innovation and forward-thinking approach—our Department provides an exceptional setting to advance your academic and professional aspirations.
