Geography is a multifaceted field that examines both natural and human-made environments across various scales, from local communities to the entire planet. From addressing climate change issues and exploring socioeconomic connections to monitoring environmental transformations and advancing mapping technologies, Geography connects the social sciences (human geography), geospatial technologies (geomatics), and natural sciences (physical geography) to develop sustainable solutions for global challenges. If you seek a well-established discipline that provides practical experience, enhances both analytical and observational skills, and fosters a holistic approach to solving today's pressing environmental and sustainability issues, you're in the perfect place. Our Department provides undergraduate programs (B.E.S.), a Master of Climate Change (M.C.C.), research-based master's degrees (M.E.S., M.A., M.Sc.), and a Ph.D. program.

The Department of Geography and Environmental Management at the University of Waterloo ranks among the top 100 Geography departments globally and holds the 5th position in Canada. With 35 faculty members specializing in diverse areas of human geography, physical geography, geomatics, and aviation, we offer extensive research opportunities. At the graduate level, we collaborate with Wilfrid Laurier University's Geography and Environmental Studies department, forming the "Waterloo-Laurier Graduate Program in Geography," which combines the strengths of both institutions. Students can pursue three thesis-based master's degrees (MA, MES, and MSc) or three course-based programs (MA, MES, and MCC). The program encourages interdisciplinary learning through connections with various labs, research groups, and centers, including the Collaborative Water Program. As part of the University of Waterloo—a leader in innovation and progressive education—our Department provides an excellent environment to achieve your academic and professional aspirations.
