The University of Waterloo's Sociology and Legal Studies Department is a hub for rigorous research, offering varied programs that explore critical societal challenges. Since 1960, we've provided undergraduate and graduate degrees (MA and PhD) in Sociology, and since 2009, an interdisciplinary Legal Studies undergraduate program. We cultivate an intellectually stimulating environment for sociological and socio-legal inquiry while nurturing strong mentorship between students and faculty. Our curriculum builds on core strengths in social theory and research methods, with faculty and student work advancing knowledge in key areas: Crime, Law, and Security; Knowledge, Education, and Digital Culture; Migration, Borders, and Transnationalism; and Social Inequality and Public Policy. Our work helps individuals comprehend their societal roles, navigate complex social, political, economic, and cultural landscapes, and appreciate diverse viewpoints. The department fosters a welcoming, dynamic atmosphere for learning and developing sociological insights into contemporary global challenges. Our engaging MA and PhD programs equip graduate students with deeper knowledge of social, political, economic, and cultural dynamics through sociological theory, critical analysis, and interdisciplinary research. We offer coursework and research opportunities in law and crime studies, social inequalities and policy, migration and transnationalism, governance, and cultural education.
The MA program offers full-time or part-time study with thesis, major research paper, or coursework-only options, typically requiring 3 to 8 academic terms depending on degree path and co-op choices.
