Our institution provides both undergraduate and graduate degrees (MA and PhD) in Sociology (established in 1960) along with an interdisciplinary Legal Studies undergraduate program (launched in 2009). We cultivate an intellectually stimulating environment dedicated to scholarly excellence in sociological and socio-legal studies, while nurturing strong mentorship relationships between students and faculty. Our curriculum builds upon core competencies in social theory and research methodologies, with faculty and student research expanding knowledge in key focus areas: Crime, Law, and Security; Knowledge, Education, and Digital Culture; Migration, Borders, and Transnationalism; and Social Inequality and Public Policy. Our academic work enables individuals to better comprehend their societal roles, navigate complex social, political, economic, and cultural landscapes, and appreciate diverse viewpoints. The Sociology Department at Waterloo fosters a welcoming, collaborative atmosphere that encourages learning and developing sociological insights into contemporary societal issues. Our engaging MA and PhD programs equip graduate students with enhanced understanding of social, political, economic, and cultural dynamics through sociological frameworks, critical thinking, and cross-disciplinary research approaches. Students can explore specialized coursework and research in domains including law and criminal justice, social disparities and policy, migration studies, governance, and cultural-educational dynamics.
The MA program offers full-time or part-time enrollment with thesis, major research paper, or coursework-only pathways. Completion typically requires 3 to 8 full-time terms, varying by degree track and co-op participation.
