Geography is a multifaceted field that examines both natural and human-made environments across various scales. From addressing climate crises to exploring socioeconomic dynamics, assessing environmental transformations, or advancing mapping technologies, Geography connects social sciences (human geography), geospatial technologies (geomatics), and natural sciences (physical geography) to develop sustainable solutions for global challenges. If you seek a foundational discipline with practical training, analytical skill development, and a holistic approach to modern environmental issues, look no further. Our Department provides undergraduate programs (B.E.S.), a Master of Climate Change (M.C.C.), research-based graduate degrees (M.E.S., M.A., M.Sc.), and doctoral studies (Ph.D.).
The University of Waterloo's Department of Geography and Environmental Management ranks among the world's top 100 Geography programs and holds 5th place in Canada. With 35 faculty specializing in human geography, physical geography, geomatics, and aviation, we collaborate at the graduate level with Wilfrid Laurier University's Geography and Environmental Studies department through the joint "Waterloo-Laurier Graduate Program in Geography." This partnership combines resources from both institutions, offering three thesis-based (MA, MES, MSc) and three course-based (MA, MES, MCC) master's degrees. Students benefit from interdisciplinary connections with research labs, centers, and programs like the Collaborative Water Program. As part of Waterloo's innovative academic community, our Department fosters intellectual growth and professional development.
Climate change research is a cornerstone of Waterloo's work, spanning policy analysis, environmental effects, and adaptation strategies. Several faculty members have contributed to climate science since the 1980s, with ongoing participation in IPCC reports as authors or reviewers over the past 15 years.
