The Department of Economics is dedicated to outstanding research and teaching. Our faculty explore diverse economic subjects and consistently publish in top-tier Economics journals. Both our graduate and undergraduate curricula address current global economic trends while developing modern analytical capabilities. The integration of co-op work experiences with academic study contributes significantly to our students' exceptional achievements. With 28 research-active professors, our department spans numerous specialties such as econometrics, development economics, economic theory, environmental economics, health economics, industrial organization, international trade, labor economics, law and economics, macroeconomics, and public finance. Faculty members regularly publish in leading economics publications and frequently secure research grants that create opportunities for graduate students. Our undergraduate and graduate programs embody Waterloo Economics' three pillars: Learning, Practical Experience, and Career Preparation. The MA program develops crucial analytical and problem-solving abilities via coursework, research projects, and practical applications. The MA Co-op option extends this learning with an eight-month professional placement, often serving as a career launchpad. Our PhD program establishes rigorous expertise in economic theory and econometrics, with applications across multiple economic disciplines.
