The Department of Economics provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. These programs aim to enhance students' analytical skills in economics through comprehensive training in theoretical frameworks, econometric methods, and diverse economic fields. Program alumni have secured prestigious academic appointments, significant government roles, and rewarding positions in private sector organizations. With its extensive and varied faculty, the department enables students to focus on nearly any economics specialization.
The MA program consists solely of coursework (without a thesis requirement) and spans about eight months, commencing in mid-August. (Please note that classes begin earlier than the standard University of Toronto academic calendar). Admissions occur exclusively in August each year, with no January intake. Full-time students must fulfill all degree requirements within three years of enrollment, while part-time students have a six-year completion window.

Successful completion of full-year courses in calculus, intermediate microeconomics, intermediate macroeconomics, and statistics.
Admission is competitive, so accepted applicants will normally have achieved a standing considerably higher than the minimum of at least a mid-B (75%) in the final year.
English language requirements
International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Required score: 7.0 (Academic) with at least 6.5 for each component.
Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT) Including Writing and Speaking Sections: Overall score: 93; Writing: 22; Speaking: 22
Academic English Level 60: Required score: B
Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Online: Required score: 70 minimum total with at least 60 in each part.
The Certificate of Proficiency in English (COPE): Required score: 76 minimum total with at least 22 in each component and 32 in writing
Cambridge Assessment English: Required score: minimum 185 overall with at least 176 in each component.
