The Master of Financial Economics (MFE) program is an intensive, selective professional degree jointly provided by Canada's leading Economics Department and premier business school, the Rotman School of Management. This five-semester program (Summer/Fall/Winter/Summer/Fall) combines four semesters of coursework at Rotman and the Economics Department with a required full-time internship in financial services. Students enroll in MBA-level finance courses (including Corporate Finance, Derivatives, and Investment Analysis) alongside graduate economics classes (covering Financial Economics, Macro/Microeconomics, and Econometrics), while gaining practical experience through paid internships at elite financial firms.
The MFE curriculum delivers comprehensive knowledge of financial principles and their economic foundations. Graduates consistently secure positions in investment banking, corporate finance, trading, private equity, asset management, economic consulting, hedge funds, risk analysis, and government roles. Ideal candidates possess robust quantitative skills and undergraduate degrees in finance, economics, business, mathematics, or statistics. Admission is extremely competitive, with rolling applications strongly encouraged.
This prestigious limited-enrollment program, offered by the University of Toronto's Economics Department and Rotman School of Management, runs exclusively as an 18-month full-time course beginning each July. With only one annual intake, all degree requirements must be fulfilled within three years of enrollment. January or September admissions are not available.
