Our institution delivers both undergraduate and graduate programs (MA and PhD) in Sociology (established in 1960) along with an interdisciplinary Legal Studies undergraduate degree (launched in 2009). We maintain a strong dedication to scholarly excellence through rigorous sociological and socio-legal inquiry while nurturing mentorship relationships between students and faculty. Our curriculum builds upon core competencies in social theory and research methodologies, while faculty and student research expands knowledge across key focus areas: Crime, Law, and Security; Knowledge, Education, and Digital Culture; Migration, Borders, and Transnationalism; and Social Inequality and Public Policy. Our academic work enables individuals to better comprehend their societal roles, navigate complex social, political, economic, and cultural landscapes, and appreciate diverse viewpoints. Waterloo's Sociology Department fosters a welcoming, collaborative atmosphere that encourages learning and developing sociological insights into contemporary societal issues. Our engaging graduate programs equip students with enhanced analytical skills through sociological frameworks, critical examination, and cross-disciplinary research approaches. Course offerings and research opportunities span diverse fields including legal systems and security, social disparities and policy, migration patterns, governance structures, and cultural-educational dynamics.
